Design Trends 2017: Roller Shade Fabrics

"2017 is a year for the bold. Go bold or go home, or, bring bold in to your home."

“2017 is a year for the bold,” writes Gemma Gear of That’s so Gemma, an interior design blog. “Go bold or go home, or, bring bold in to your home. Liven up minimalistic living spaces with some ‘out there’ statement pieces. Whether it be large geometric prints, tapestry tiles or anything botanical. Maybe not all together though…Now that would be BOLD.”

"These trends are chic, inspiring and (fortunately) don’t require a complete room overhaul."

5 Fabric Trends to Watch in 2017

1. Green

As we mentioned in our blog Looking Forward to Interior Design Trends of 2017, Dark Green is very trendy this year, whether you are talking window treatments, rugs, or paint color as it “adds depth and can bring in the colors from the outdoors,” says Lauren Macer of Sisalla Interior Design. But it’s not just dark greens. Green as a whole is “strong again,” according to celebrity interior designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard – from lime green to emerald.

“There’s an understanding, now, that you can use green as a neutral color, just as mother nature does,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “With any flower that pops out of the earth, you never say, ‘Oh, that can’t go against green’.”

In fact, the Pantone 2017 Color of the Year is Greenery, a bright tint of green meant to evoke thoughts of flourishing foliage and, in turn, fresh beginnings.

“This shade of green is different from what we’ve ever done as color of the year before,” says Eiseman. “We love that feeling of newness, of realigning yourself and revitalizing yourself. A really important aspect is that the color has vibrancy and a little bit of brightness.”

Our Recommendation: Our two-toned Linen Roller Shades in Herb green add depth, texture, and earthy color to any room.

2. Tropical Prints

Patterns are back according to multiple interior design experts. Patterned blinds, or patterned shades have come and gone in terms of home décor stylings over the years, and their popularity is back on the rise. As the old saying goes, “What is old, comes new again.” The new patterns and fabrics are easy to style and come in a wide variety to choose from.

“After years of beige, it was revitalizing to see vibrant colors and patterns recapturing the imagination of designers,” says interior designer and style spotter Gary Inman.

2017 promises to be the year of the tropical print – perfect for accessorizing. “It’s just like buying a great piece of classic clothing,” says interior designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard. “You can certainly refresh it with a new bag and shoes.” And an easy way to accessorize a room is with new window treatments.

Our Recommendation: Our Fusion Roller Shades are an easy way to add tropical elements without overwhelming a room.

3. Texture

“We’re seeing more companies embrace the softer side of color through transparency and texture,” writes Nancy Fire, HGTV. Texture is really important,” adds Lawrence-Bullard. “We are seeing more and more texture in every form.” And your window treatments are no exception. Without redesigning your entire space, updating your window treatments is a quick, easy, and visually pleasing way to incorporate texture into any room.

“Finally we see textures being a big theme,” says Jacquie Dunton of Sweetpea & Willow, a London-based luxury furniture and accessories boutique.

Our Recommendation: Our Stowe Roller Shades are the perfect way to subtly add texture to a room.

4. Geometric

Say goodbye to soft, gentle curves. Geometric patterns are all the rage in 2017. “Large, mod geometric designs made an appearance in 2016 and will be a front-runner in 2017,” says Jeffrey Weldler, marketing director with VÄNT Wall Panels. “You can’t go wrong with geometric patterns,” adds interior designer and blogger Maragret Ryall.

“Your goal should always be to create a home that feels curated, and an easy way to accomplish this is through pattern,” namely geometric pattern, writes Valeris.

Our Recommendation: Our Mode Roller Shades are bold and eye-catching, yet low-key enough as to not take over a room. These window treatments work well as a complimentary piece.

“Don’t feel like your home needs to have all modern design in order to add geometric patterns,” Weldler says. “Geometrics even have a place in an industrial farmhouse–style home.”

5. Gray

“Gray was a prominent color in 2016 interiors and it will continue to reign in 2017,” writes Valeris. This is because the color compliments a full spectrum of shades, allowing seamless integration into your decor. “We will see different tones of gray, a lot of gray and white, and gray in deeper colors,” says interior designer Beth Diana Smith.

Our Recommendation: Our Lylith Roller Shades are an aesthetically pleasing way to incorporate gray into your interior.
